Nigeria’s fintech heavyweight Moniepoint is expanding into East Africa, acquiring a 78% stake in Sumac Microfinance Bank as part of its regional growth strategy.
The move gives Moniepoint a strong foothold in Kenya’s financial services market, allowing it to combine its digital payments and banking infrastructure with Sumac’s local microfinance operations. The acquisition is expected to enhance access to credit, payments, and financial services for businesses and individuals.
This marks a significant cross border expansion as African fintechs increasingly scale beyond their home markets to capture new growth opportunities. By entering Kenya one of Africa’s most advanced fintech ecosystems Moniepoint is positioning itself to compete at a higher level in the continent’s financial services space.
If successfully integrated, the deal could accelerate financial inclusion while strengthening Moniepoint’s ambition to become a pan-African digital banking powerhouse.
