MTN Group is shutting down its Ayoba super app, marking a significant retreat from its ambition to build a homegrown digital ecosystem spanning messaging, payments, and content across Africa.
Launched as a multi-service platform to rival global apps, Ayoba struggled to achieve the scale and engagement needed to compete in a market dominated by established players. Despite integrating chat, music, gaming, and other services, user traction and monetization remained limited.
The shutdown signals a strategic reset. MTN appears to be refocusing resources on core revenue drivers such as connectivity, fintech, and infrastructure, where it maintains stronger competitive advantages.
For Africa’s tech ecosystem, the move underscores a key reality: building a super app requires deep user stickiness, ecosystem scale, and sustained investment. Even telecom giants are not immune to the challenges of competing with global platforms in the digital services space.
