Ghana Card Goes Live as Payment Tool in Major Digital Identity Upgrade

April 1, 20261 min read

Ghana is turning identity into infrastructure. The Ghana Card can now be used to make payments, marking a significant step in integrating digital identity with financial services.

The upgrade allows users to link their Ghana Card to payment systems, enabling transactions without relying on traditional bank cards or mobile wallets. This move builds on Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda, where national ID is increasingly becoming a gateway to accessing services across banking, fintech, and government platforms.

This is more than a feature rollout. It signals a shift toward identity driven payments, where a single verified ID can unlock multiple layers of the digital economy from financial inclusion to service access.

If adoption scales, the Ghana Card could evolve into a foundational payment rail, simplifying transactions while expanding access to formal financial systems across the country.
